Wales fans made their voices known by booing God Save the King ahead of their international friendly against Northern Ireland on Tuesday night.

The two nations met at the Cardiff City Stadium in the friendly after seeing their World Cup hopes dashed last week.

Wales had lost on penalties in a play-off semi-final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Northern Ireland were downed by Italy.

Those results set up a friendly between two sides licking their wounds over World Cup disappointment.

As both teams lined up for the national anthems ahead of the fixture, Wales fans began booing as God Save the King was played for Northern Ireland.

Home supporters could also be heard chanting ‘Wales, Wales’ as the anthem continued.

Welsh players and fans then belted out their national anthem ‘Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau’, otherwise known as the Old Land of My Fathers.

Northern Ireland would ultimately take the lead in the friendly through Jamie Donley.

Sorba Thomas equalised for the hosts in the early stages of the second half, with the match ultimately ending in a 1-1 draw.

It was not the first time Welsh football fans have booed God Save the King, with supporters doing so previously during a World Cup match in 2022.

England fans had begun singing the national anthem during a group stage match with Wales at Qatar 2022, with Wales supporters attempting to drown it out with boos.

The trend seems to have only been restricted to football, with Welsh rugby fans perfectly observing God Save the King ahead of a Six Nations match in February.

Earlier this month, Prince William delighted royal fans with his ‘fantastic’ secret talent during a Six Nations match.

The Prince of Wales was seen passionately singing along to the Welsh national anthem from the stands, ahead of their match with Italy.
