A Manchester City fan who hurled abuse at Gary Neville after Manchester City’s Carabao Cup win was shushed by the former Manchester United defender.

City secured their ninth League Cup title with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley on Sunday, with former United right-back Gary Neville on co-commentary duty for Sky Sports.

After the game a jubilant City fan could be heard calling Neville a ‘Red ****’ as well as chanting ‘Neville’s a w****r, w****r, w****r’.

‘Where’s your club, where’s your team, you Red ****?’ the man could be heard shouting at the 51-year-old while the Sky Sports commentator was taking a moment to step away from his duties in the gantry to take a picture with a passerby.

Neville, who had at first appeared to be ignoring the abuse, then turned up to the stands and put his finger to his mouth, telling the fan to be quiet.

This appeared to encourage the City fan, who began laughing. Clearly finding some amusement in the situation, Neville smiled while also encouraging the man to keep it down, before returning to his screen.

This isn’t the first time a pundit has been abused while working a football game, with Neville’s former United team-mate Roy Keane getting involved in an altercation with an Ipswich fan after United’s 1-1 draw against the side in November 2024.

The former United captain furiously hit back at the supporter abusing him and told them to continue their clash in the ‘car park’ after the match.

In a video exclusively filmed by Daily Mail Sport, the 53-year-old, who managed Ipswich between 2009 and 2011, could be seen putting down his microphone, placing his hands in his pockets and walking over to confront the fan directly before a heated back-and-forth ensued.

A subsequent video shared to social media after the match showed Keane continually telling the fan to ‘wait and discuss it in the car park’ as abusive words were hurled in his direction.

Keane had already been the subject of an attack in which he was headbutted in a corporate area at Arsenal the previous season.

Daily Mail Sport reported in December 2024 that – following high level talks between broadcasters, the Premier League and clubs – security staff will be placed in front of gantries at grounds were pundits are positioned close to public areas.

Officials believe that the growth of social media has emboldened certain fans who see the presence of pundits nearby as an opportunity to make a name for themselves by posting videos of themselves hurling abuse and attempting to trigger a reaction.
