Rory McIlroy furiously told a golf fan to ‘shut the f*** up’ after he yelled out during his back swing at the PGA Championship on Sunday.

McIlroy mishit a delicate chip shot on the par-five 16th hole into a bunker as a result of the fan’s shout and turned around to call him out.

It was unclear what the fan shouted but it clearly irked McIlroy who snapped during a frustrating final round.

The back-to-back Masters champion also appeared to point out the man to marshals nearby in an effort to get him removed from the course.

It comes just months after McIlroy and his European teammates were abused and heckled by American fans during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage in New York.

The Northern Irishman and his wife Erica were subjected to vile taunts and heckling as he led Europe to victory over the USA at Bethpage Black in September.

McIlroy was called a ‘f****t’ and barracked about his private life, while Erica was branded a ‘wh**e’ and even struck by a drink thrown from the crowd.

McIlroy was seen confronting fans on several occasions as tensions escalated, but ultimately had the last laugh after securing Europe’s first away Ryder Cup win since 2012.

It was not the first time at this week’s PGA Championship that McIlroy exchanged words with fans.

On Thursday, during the opening round, he confronted a group of spectators who had built their own makeshift stand around the 14th tee and 13th green.

After they appeared to make some noises during his swing, McIlroy turned back to speak to them and said: ‘Just do it after we hit’.

It proved to be a frustrating final round at Aronimink for McIlroy, who failed to close the gap to the leaders and finished five shots behind eventual champion Aaron Rai.

Earlier this week, a frustrated McIlroy bluntly declared his first round ‘s***’. He was also forced to pull out of a practice round because of a blister on his toe.
