Former England and Tottenham star Gary Mabbutt is in hospital after suffering a ‘serious accident’ in South Africa.

Mabbutt, 64, required treatment on a ‘big blood clot in his calf’, former Spurs team-mate and friend Micky Hazard said on Facebook.

Hazard, 66, revealed Mabbutt would remain in South Africa until at least July 24 as he is not allowed to fly home as a result of the problem. The incident occurred on the eve of England’s World Cup semi-final clash with Argentina.

‘Guys just to let you all know Gary Mabbutt has had a serious accident in South Africa, he’s currently in hospital awaiting treatment an a big blood clot in his calf,’ he wrote.

‘Not allowed to fly until 24th at the earliest to get back to England.

‘Please send him your best wishes to lift his spirits.

‘Best wishes Mabsy you’ve fought bigger battles than this and won.’

Mabbutt, capped 16 times by England, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 17.

The ex-Spurs and Bristol Rovers player previously revealed he has ‘very little feeling’ in his foot because of his diabetes and the injuries he endured during his playing career.

Spurs have been in contact with Mabbutt following the accident, according to Sky Sports.

Mabbutt, a versatile defender who made 601 appearances for the club before retiring in 1998, also underwent major heart surgery in 2017. He was admitted to hospital after complaining of chest pains and breathlessness before being released a week later.
