- West Coast slammed by Will Scofield for celebrating rival’s downfall
West Coast stars and officials have been blasted by a former Eagles player for the way they celebrated Fremantle’s one-point elimination final defeat to the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The Suns blew a 26-point lead against the Dockers but managed to regain their composure in the dying minutes to seal a famous win at Optus Stadium.
West Coast wildly cheered their rivals’ misfortune while watching on during the club’s awards night at Crown Perth’s Grand Ballroom, which came after the club got the wooden spoon with just one win all year.
Video footage from the event shows those attending cheering as the Dockers’ campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion.
‘Nah, you’re done, you’re done. It’s a long train back to Fremantle,’ a voice could be heard saying as the room erupted.
Will Schofield, who racked up 194 AFL games with West Coast, didn’t like the petty reaction.

‘The footage I saw, they’re clapping and carrying on at the best and fairest. Goodness gracious,’ Schofield told 6PR Perth.
‘You know why it’s on the first Saturday of finals? Because you didn’t make it, you won one game. Disappointing, to say the least.
‘It’s blurred vision, mate. It’s blurred vision. It’s not just players at the best and fairest, (but) I’m pretty sure it’s players, yes.’
Schofield said that West Coast need to concentrate on improving rather than tearing down their rivals.
‘I’m grumpy at West Coast because for three or four years, I’ve had to be in the media and talk about them and defend them and be positive about them and polish an absolute turd,’ he said.
‘That’s what it is; it’s got worse and worse. There’s no positivity there.
‘And the footage I saw, sent me of a cliff with it a bit.
‘It’s annoyed me. Because we watch a really good side in Freo; they’ve got their recruiting right, they’ve got their players right and, yeah they lose, but they’re going about it the right way.

West Coast have not made the finals since 2020 and are still in the middle of the club’s largest ever rebuild.
The team got some rare good news when Harley Reid re-signed with the club last month.
The midfielder was being hunted by clubs from his home state of Victoria but chose to remain in Perth until the end of the 2028 season on a deal worth a reported $2million a year.
