A rescue operation on Mount Charleston in May led to a suspected domestic battery investigation after a man claimed his date threw rocks at him and left her young child to walk down a trail alone, according to police reports.

Mount Charleston Fire and Rescue and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police search and rescue teams responded to the Cathedral Rock Trailhead around 7:30 p.m. on May 23, following reports of a lost hiker and a potential domestic dispute, as reported by FOX5 Vegas.

First responders with American Medical Response located the woman’s young daughter walking down the trail by herself without shoes. Paramedics reported that the child was showing signs of hypothermia and transported her to UMC Pediatrics for a medical evaluation.

The mother was located off-trail a short time later by emergency crews. According to police, she appeared to be under the influence and was unable to speak with officers at the scene. She was also transported to UMC for treatment.

The incident began as a first date, a man involved in the dispute told the outlet.

According to a police incident report, the man stated that the woman injured her knee during the hike and became angry when he called authorities for assistance. He told officers that she began screaming at him and throwing softball-sized rocks, some of which struck his shins.

The man provided a voluntary statement to police, though officers reported he had no visible injuries and declined medical attention.

Based on the man’s account of the altercation, police filed a report for suspected domestic battery. Child Protective Services was notified of the situation, and local domestic violence resource organization SafeNest was contacted to advise officers on the case.
