A Boston Red Sox fan had a moment to forget on Sunday afternoon when his very public marriage proposal went badly wrong, with the eyes of Fenway Park watching.
The fan, currently known only as Douglas, had prepared what he – presumably – had expected to be a romantic moment between himself and girlfriend Serah in the middle of the team’s game against the Houston Astros.
After liaising with the Red Sox pregame, he appeared on the jumbotron in front of the thousands in attendance, asking Serah if she would marry him… only for disaster to strike.
In a further bizarre twist to the tale, the now-viral clip of the moment was captured by Linda Henry, the wife of billionaire Red Sox owner John, who captioned her Instagram Story: ‘Quieter reaction on this one…..’
In the video, Douglas can be seen turning to Serah, while the message flashes up on the screen: ‘Serah Linn, will you marry me?’
After a brutal pause, and with a stony expression, Serah appears to say ‘I don’t know’, before a look of panic then spreads across Douglas’ face.
Douglas’ big moment with girlfriend Serah went badly wrong at Fenway Park on Sunday

In a bid to end the awkward moment, Douglas leaned in for a kiss on the Fenway jumbotron
In a bid to rescue the situation before it gets away from him even further, Douglas then ditches the ring exchange and leans straight in for a kiss.
Serah, thankfully, obliges, and the pair then exchange some whispers before Douglas points at the jumbotron, as if to remind his partner that the world is watching.
It is unclear exactly how the proposal ended, or if the pair will go ahead with their nuptials. The Daily Mail is chasing more information on that.
On social media, though, users were ruthless with their reactions to the viral moment, with one writing: ‘Imagine getting rejected on the big screen then coming home and opening Twitter to this.’
It was a brutal day on and off the field for the Red Sox, who lost 3-1 to the Houston Astros
Another added: ‘Oh nooooooo…. They were definitely not [on] the same page,’ while a third said: ‘Bad mojo everywhere with this team.’
The Red Sox went on to lose the game 3-1 to the Houston Astros – yet another blow for Douglas – with the team’s record moving to 13-21 for the season.
Boston is rock bottom of the AL East, 10 games back from their bitter rival New York Yankees, and with playoff hopes already fading.
