- Jack Wighton has sworn off alcohol for six months
- Instagram post from Friday perhaps tells another story
- NRL star is keen for huge 2025 season with Rabbitohs
Footy star Jack Wighton has raised eyebrows after appearing to skoll a beer when out on a boat with a friend.
While it is certainly no crime, it comes just days after the Rabbitohs centre, 31, declared he was following the lead of teammate Latrell Mitchell by self-imposing a booze ban for six months ahead of the 2025 NRL season.
He also stated he wants to hit the ground running in pre-season at Maroubra under new coach Wayne Bennett.
But in an Instagram story uploaded to Wighton’s sealegs_adventures page on Friday, the former NSW and Australian player was all smiles as he poured what looked like a beer over himself in playful fashion.
Ex-Raiders teammates Tom Starling, Jordan Rapana and Adam Elliott all shared the vision to their social media followers, where Wighton can be seen grinning like a kid on Christmas Day while shirtless and wearing sunglasses in the dark.
It has not been confirmed when the vision was filmed, or if the bottle contained alcohol, but the optics aren’t great.
‘Just started, 18 days in bra …[but] not counting,’ Wighton recently told News Corp in relation to abstaining from alcohol.
‘It’s only for me, I just wanna have a bit of fun, enjoy my family, get into activities outside of footy, train hard and put my best foot forward on the field.’

Wighton has also been training with renowned sprint coach Roger Fabri in a bid to add another element to his running game.
‘I’m getting a bit older, in the body….not the head, so I am just trying to keep up with the young boys,’ he said.
‘It’s just a new thing I’m trying to learn and having a bit of fun while doing it.’
Wighton made his first grade debut with the Raiders in 2012 and quickly became a fan favourite playing fullback and then in the halves.
He featured in the 2019 NRL Grand Final against the Roosters and also won the 2021 World Cup with the Kangaroos.
In November last year, Wighton and Mitchell – who are distant cousins – saw a number of charges dropped in the ACT Magistrates Court after police admitted to false evidence.
Wighton was initially charged with contravening an exclusion order and fighting in a public place, while Mitchell was charged with fighting in a public place, affray, and resisting territory official following a night out celebrating Wighton’s 30th birthday in February.
Sergeant David Power later apologised to Wighton in court.
