Former Penn State football star Kyle Vasey is fighting for his life in hospital after being seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash that killed his fiancee.

Vasey, 30, was walking on a Colorado sidewalk with his 35-year-old fiancee Corinne More on the morning of June 1 when a driver with a revoked license plowed into them.

More was killed in the crash, while Vasey – who was also on the roster of the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL and now works as a realtor – was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and multiple fractures.

A GoFundMe page created by Vasey’s family revealed that the former long snapper is currently still on a ventilator and his left arm is the only limb not injured in the devastating incident.

He has so far had six surgeries on three spine fractures and four broken ribs, and his family are appealing for funds to help with the ‘ever-climbing medical bills’.

A third pedestrian, 72-year-old Dianne Windes, was also rushed to hospital from the crash site after suffering multiple injuries.

According to CBS News, witnesses at the scene described how the driver – who had a suspended license from a previous DUI – intentionally plowed into the three pedestrians.

It is reported that the incident, which took place in Highlands Ranch, occurred at 10:30am last Monday and that after the crash the driver made a U-turn, slowly drove past the wreckage, and then left the scene.

Another witness is said to have followed him over five miles to Daniels Park, and 15 minutes later 28-year-old Adam Bauserman was taken into custody.

A police report describes Bauserman’s demeanor as ‘unusually quiet’, and he is said to have asked officers: ‘Do you know if I killed the man?’

Instead, it was Vasey’s fiancee More who was killed at the scene. Flowers are said to have piled up on the sidewalk where the crash took place last week.

CBS reports that investigators do not believe the driver knew any of the victims.

In an affidavit written after the incident, a doctor described Vasey as ‘being at substantial risk for permanent disfigurement or death.’

In the subsequent GoFundMe page created by his parents Bruce and Shelley Vasey, it is claimed that ‘everyone is optimistic about his physical recovery’ in the wake of his initial surgeries.

In comments to the media, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said of Bauserman: ‘He should never have been on the roadway, period.

‘And so, the fact that somebody in our community has been lost in such a tragic, horrible way. How many lives have been destroyed by this selfish act?’

Reacting to witness statements that claimed the act was deliberate, he added: ‘If we can prove that, we’ll certainly do that, but at this point we have no indication of that.’
