Ex-England footballer Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after crashing his Lamborghini, The Independent understands.
The ex-Manchester City forward, 31, is understood to have crashed his Lamborghini into the barriers of the M3 southbound shortly before 9am on Thursday 28 May, near the Minley Interchange.
Hampshire Police said a 31-year-old man from Berkshire was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of Class C drugs and failing to provide a specimen.
No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, police said.
A source close to Sterling told The Independent it had been an “extremely tough couple of years” for the footballer and that “this incident encompasses that”.
They said the incident “brings into spotlight modern treatment of players who are no longer ‘fit for purpose’”, adding that the “psychological strain that has put on him is immeasurable”.
The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal star is now playing for Eredivisie club Feyenoord, in the Netherlands, who he signed for in February and will remain with until the end of the season.
He played for England between 2012 and 2022, and was awarded the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year while playing for Manchester City.
