The man accused of shooting a July 4 partygoer in Memphis has been identified as former University of Kansas guard Lagerald Vick, according to a police affidavit obtained by The Daily Mail.

The 29-year-old Vick is now facing a first-degree attempted-murder charge and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony in Shelby County. Bond has been set at $1.5 million following his arrest on Saturday.

The victim, identified as Carlos Funzie, claimed he was at a party on the north side of the city when he was confronted by a man with a handgun tucked under his armpit, according to the affidavit. Funzie further told police he attempted to deescalate the situation by turning away, which is when he said he was shot in the back by the aggressor, who fled the scene.

Funzie was struck in his lower back and transported to a nearby hospital in a private vehicle, the affidavit continued.

The victim provided police with the suspect’s first name and later picked Vick out of a six-person photographic lineup, according to police.

Vick was arrested Saturday afternoon and does not have a listed attorney. He is due back in court for a bail review hearing on Tuesday at 9am local time.

The Memphis-born guard enrolled at Kansas in 2015 and had a successful career with the basketball powerhouse until he left the program in February of 2019 due to personal matters.

He would miss the remainder of his senior season before pursuing a professional career overseas.

Over his time in Lawrence, Vick won a national championship as a freshman before the team finished third, fourth and 19th in subsequent years. Vick was at his best as a senior, averaging 14.1 points a game before leaving the team.

He also set a school record that year by making eight 3-pointers in a game without a miss.

As a pro, Vick played everywhere from Taiwan to Colombia, Venezuela, Uruguay and New Zealand before stepping away from the game in 2024.
