There are many ways to lose your job in Washington. You can resign gracefully. You can be forced out after a scandal. You can quietly “step aside” for the good of the administration.

And then there is the 2026 method: being fired in real time on social media by Donald Trump while you are literally about to take the stage at a conference.

Yes, sad news, everyone: Kristi Noem was speaking at an event being broadcast live from Nashville on Thursday when the president she had sworn fealty to announced to the world — via a characteristically exuberant Truth Social post — that she was no longer Secretary of Homeland Security. Instead, she would be “moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” which completely and totally sounds like a real job.

Her replacement, Trump announced, would be Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin, whom the president praised as a “MAGA Warrior” and — perhaps most importantly in this administration’s personnel calculus — an “undefeated professional MMA fighter.”

The timing was exquisite. As Noem spoke, the news broke that her boss had effectively replaced her mid-sentence. (She was notified in a phone call from Trump — just before she got out of the limo for the event, per reports.) It was humiliating, chaotic and entirely predictable. It wasn’t made much better by the later statement that she’d already been aware of the demotion and that she’d be staying in her job until the end of March.

Because while the official statement thanked Noem for her “spectacular results (especially on the Border!),” the truth is that her tenure had been wobbling for months. Washington had already started to treat her like a political black hole, one that risked sucking in everyone unlucky enough to orbit too close.

This was, after all, a woman whose most uncontroversial moment was casually admitting to killing a puppy.

Noem’s rise in Trumpworld was initially meteoric. The former South Dakota governor reinvented herself as one of the most aggressive culture war operators in Republican politics, a politician seemingly designed in a lab to thrive in the era of viral outrage. At no time in history has someone referred to newly slain American citizens as domestic terrorists with such a spectacular blowout.

Beltway rumors had been proliferating for weeks that Kristi’s days were numbered. When North Carolina senator Thom Tillis literally compared her leadership of ICE to the time she shot her dog a couple days ago, it was widely considered to be the end. And that’s without even getting into the moment where she was quizzed about the eyebrow-raising and extremely persistent rumors that she’d been sleeping with her top aide, Corey Lewandowski, before which her husband was discreetly escorted from the room.

To be ambushed like that in public and taken down, as an American citizen?! Unthinkable.

The president, famously allergic to anyone who looks weak or unpopular, loves a dramatic exit. In 2017, he memorably dismissed Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff via Twitter while Priebus was still on the tarmac after landing with the president in New York. Well, that’s showbiz, baby, you can fly home coach. And just because you’ve cultivated an excellent Mar a Lago Face doesn’t mean you’ll always have an open invitation to Mar a Lago.

And so Kristi finds herself on the wrong side of the MAGA border, cast out with the likes of anti-war MAGA weirdos like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson. Enter Markwayne Mullin, MMA-style. Border security, but make it UFC!!! Lights, camera, action!

Noem’s consolation prize — the mysteriously titled “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas” — remains a bit of a puzzle. Perhaps it will involve regional security coordination. Perhaps it will involve photo ops in cowboy hats. Perhaps it will quietly disappear in six months, like so many other grandly named initiatives in Trump’s political universe.

Needless to say, the cities and states ripped apart by ICE lately haven’t exactly been hiding their schadenfreude. “Kristi Noem has done a stunning amount of damage and it’s good she’s gone,” was Tim Walz’s assessment of the situation.

And as for her own party? Asked by The Independent’s Eric Garcia why he brought up the whole dead dog situation while questioning her earlier this week, Thom Tillis replied: “it was a precipitous, emotionally based decision, and that’s not unlike some of the precipitous, emotionally based decisions she’s made as secretary.”

Gosh, isn’t it sad to see a woman so committed to rooting out domestic terrorists suddenly iced out in such a humiliating way?
