An emergency road closure was erected at Bronygarth Bridge following storm Bert [in November 2024] and the partial collapse of the bridge parapet and retaining wall.
Bronygarth Bridge is located along Quinta Park boundary road to the county boundary at Pen-Y-Bryn.
The existing structure was historically a wide span circular masonry arch with a masonry headwall which has been bricked up and lined with a culvert, with an approximate length of 60m.
Following an inspection of the structure it was identified that the upstream headwall of the culvert was completely buried by approximately 2m of silt and stone debris, forcing the water to bypass the culvert opening and flow around the local property at Brookside Manor and through the garden and over the carriageway.
Following the emergency closure of the bridge Shropshire Council officers have been working with the owner of Brookside Manor and its contractor Kier to assist in clearing the blockage to the upstream end of a private culvert – along with undertaking a CCTV survey of the culverts condition. This was completed on 7 January 2025.
Due to the restricted access and complexity of the bridge, specialist access equipment is now required to complete the final investigations into the current condition of the structure.
Access over the bridge for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists won’t be available until the condition of the bridge has been fully assessed. Access to frontages will be maintained up to the bridge closure.
While the road is closed – and until the repair work can be completed – traffic will continue to be diverted by a signed diversion route. For more information, please see https://one.network .
Shropshire Council has instructed its engineering consultants WSP to prepare a suitable design solution. Once further inspections have been carried out, and the findings assessed, it will be decided if a safe pedestrian route across the bridge can be implemented prior to completing the repairs.
It’s not yet possible to provide a timescale or the repair work, but an update will be provided when possible,
Work to repair the bridge will be carried out by the Kier, with supervision being provided by WSP on behalf of Shropshire Council.
