Egypt’s national football coach, Hossam Hassan, made a powerful statement on the pitch after his team’s World Cup victory over Australia, waving a Palestinian flag and declaring, “My heart and soul are with them.”

He dedicated the win to both Egyptian and Palestinian people in an emotional post-game interview.

The dramatic gesture followed Egypt’s debut in the elimination round, where they secured a 4-2 penalty shootout victory against Australia after a 1-1 draw in the round of 32 on Friday.

This marked a significant moment in Egypt’s fourth World Cup appearance. A video of Hassan circulating widely on social media showed him walking across the field, flag in hand, as crowds chanted “Free, free Palestine!”

Yahia Qalash, former head of Egypt’s Journalists’ Union, described Hassan’s action as “the most significant scene” and “a telling scene in an exceptional moment.”

The display comes amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 2 million Palestinians face displacement and devastation following the conflict that began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel’s subsequent retaliation has resulted in 73,066 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Hassan’s act of solidarity echoes similar gestures by other athletes globally, including Lamine Yamal, who waved a Palestinian flag during Spanish league title celebrations earlier this year, drawing criticism from Israel’s defense minister.

Despite his public profile as a beloved street footballer from the 1980s and 90s, Hassan is not known for religious or political affiliations. He reiterated his dedication of the game to the “good and noble” Egyptian and Palestinian people.

FIFA confirmed that displaying the Palestinian flag is permitted at the World Cup, indicating no action would be taken against Hassan.

The governing body stated, “Flags representing all 211 FIFA Member Associations are permitted at FIFA tournaments, and supporters are welcome to display them in accordance with stadium regulations and the FIFA Stadium Code of Conduct.” The Palestine Football Association is indeed a FIFA member.

However, FIFA has previously sought to restrict what it deemed political statements on the pitch. During the 2022 Qatar World Cup, European teams were barred from wearing “One Love” armbands, an anti-discrimination initiative.

Similarly, a ban on Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag was upheld during this World Cup, despite legal challenges from Iranian Americans in Los Angeles.
