Ecuador’s shock World Cup win over Germany is still being celebrated by the country and now they have even more reason to celebrate after a statement from the nation’s president.

Sebastian Beccacece’s side came from behind to beat the four-time winners 2-1 on Thursday thanks to goals from Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata.

The South Americans needed victory in their final Group E match on Thursday following a defeat by Ivory Coast and a draw with Curacao – and in doing so sparked mass pandemonium in New Jersey.

And in the aftermath of those jubilant scenes, Ecuador President Daniel Noboa declared a national holiday for Friday.

Taking to X, he posted: ‘Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults, and the tough times they went through, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country.

‘Tomorrow, a holiday! Long live Ecuador.’

Gracias a los jugadores y al técnico que, a pesar de las críticas, los insultos y los malos ratos que pasaron, lograron recuperarse y darle esta inmensa alegría al país entero.

¡Mañana, feriado!

Viva el Ecuador.

Ecuador now have a match in the World Cup knockout stages to look forward to after guaranteeing a spot as one of the best eight third-place sides.

The last-32 encounter will be the first time they have progressed from the group stages since the 2006 World Cup.

Who knows if Noboa will grant another public holiday if they advance once again.
