Labour’s deputy leader Lucy Powell has said the party must “listen” and “change” its approach but continue with Keir Starmer as its leader.

Sir Keir is under mounting pressure after a string of Labour MPs called for his resignation, blaming him for the loss of hundreds of councillors in England and a major humiliation in Wales in the local election.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Saturday (9 May), Powell stuck by the prime minister, saying that while the party has to “reflect, to hear, to listen,” it also has to “get behind Keir as the leader and go forward as one team”.

A few hours after Powell made the comments, Starmer brought former prime minister Gordon Brown back into government to serve as a special envoy on global finance.
