Basketball fans were left laughing at the Lakers after LeBron James announced that he was leaving the team – but not for the reason you’d expect.
James announced on Tuesday that he would be departing the team in free agency and will seek a new challenge elsewhere.
It sets up a record-extending 24th NBA season for ‘King James’ as he winds down his career in the sport.
While there is plenty of speculation as to where he may go, fans noted that LeBron’s decision came hours after his son’s $2.3million contract with the Lakers was guaranteed.
LeBron’s son, Bronny James, is in the third year of a four-year rookie contract. Securing Bronny’s future was rumored to be a key point in trying to keep the elder James in Laker Gold.
But despite fixing that issue, LeBron announced his departure hours later – leaving fans cracking jokes at the team’s expense.

Social media mocked the Lakers while praising James for being the ‘Dad of the year’
‘Bro waited until his son got a guaranteed contract. W Dad!’ wrote one user on X.
Another said, ‘Daddy’s final move was waiting until Bronny’s contract got guaranteed before telling the Lakers he’s out.’
One commenter wrote, ‘Lakers know LeBron will force whoever he signs with to pay a ransom for his baby boy,’ while another said, ‘Ultimate fleece by the James family lol.’

‘LeBron waited until Bronny got the bag before leaving the Lakers now that’s good parenting,’ read another comment.
The Lakers confirmed LeBron’s departure with a statement from team governor Jeanie Buss on Tuesday afternoon.
‘LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history,’ the statement began.
‘We will always be thankful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020 under the toughest imaginable circumstances and the countless records he broke in purple and gold. We wish him all the best in the future, both on the court and off. He will always be a cherished part of the Lakers family.’
