Adelaide skipper Jordan Dawson was overcome with emotion at the Gabba, breaking down in tears as players from both sides surrounded him following his courageous return to football.

The Crows captain was playing his first match since the tragic death of his brother Jaryd, producing a standout performance despite the personal grief he continues to carry.

Dawson finished with 28 disposals and two goals in the clash, one of Adelaide’s best in a tough night that saw Brisbane run out 19.13 (127) to 11.9 (75) winners.

But it was the moments after the final siren that left the strongest impression, with vision capturing players from both teams embracing Dawson as he struggled to hold back tears.

The scenes were described as ‘heartbreaking scenes for Adelaide captain’, with teammates and opposition figures alike rallying around the midfielder.

Dawson had earlier paid tribute during the match itself, kissing his black armband after kicking a goal, a quiet but powerful gesture that reflected the emotional significance of the night.

His return came just one week after he stepped away from the game to mourn his brother, with the decision to play drawing widespread admiration across the AFL.

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks revealed the toll the past week had taken on his skipper.

‘I think it did take a lot of courage,’ Nicks said.

‘It’s been a really tough week or so for him, and it’s still there. I think post-game he was quite emotional.

‘It’s amazing what football can do. There are 120 minutes to actually go, and he just dug in and went to work.

‘We threw him around in a lot of different spots trying to find ourselves, but it’s a really tough place to be at the moment.

‘He’s got incredible support around him from his family and his extended family, which is our footy club.

‘I’m really proud of the way he went about it tonight. He had a crack for us, did whatever he possibly could.’

Dawson’s performance stood out not only for his numbers, but for his leadership, continuing to drive Adelaide forward in key moments despite the circumstances.

His teammates made a point of getting around their captain throughout the game, mobbing him after he kicked his goal, while veteran forward Taylor Walker was among those to offer support on field.

Before the match, Geelong great Joel Selwood shared a quiet and heartfelt exchange with Dawson, having experienced the loss of two brothers himself.

‘It is a difficult period for him to go through,’ Selwood said.

‘It’s going to be difficult for his whole life, to be honest.

‘He’s just got to look after himself. He’ll find a bit of joy about being back out there today.’

Fox Footy commentator Anthony Hudson also reflected on the emotional weight of Dawson’s return during the broadcast.

‘It’s emotional isn’t it for Jordan Dawson to be back out there playing after the trauma he’s gone through,’ Hudson said.

‘The love that he’s been given from the whole football community.

‘Took a huge effort for him to get to the footy last week and to play today and produce the performance he did. Incredible from the Adelaide captain.’

Brisbane players were quick to show their respect after the game, with several Lions embracing Dawson, including coach Chris Fagan, who placed an arm around him in a moment that resonated across the ground.

Among those to shine for the Lions was Charlie Cameron, who kicked four goals in a dominant display.

Speaking after the match, Cameron said it was an important response from his side.

‘Great, great fight back,’ he said.

‘I thought we were ruthless through those three quarters and a bit there.’
