Citywide Services, the dedicated school meals provider for Salford City Council, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Bronze ‘Food for Life’ accreditation by the Soil Association. This certification recognises the Citywide’s commitment to serving fresh, sustainable, and nutritious meals to children across Salford.
The ‘Food for Life’ accreditation is an independent endorsement, backed by annual inspections, for food providers who are taking steps to improve the food they serve. The aim of the scheme is to encourage and reward caterers who serve fresh food, source environmentally sustainable food, make healthy eating easy, and champion local food producers.
Achieving the Bronze award signifies that Citywide Catering meets several rigorous standards, including:
- Ensuring meals contain no undesirable food additives or hydrogenated fats
- Preparing at least 75% of dishes freshly from scratch
- Sourcing meat from farms that satisfy UK welfare standards
- Using eggs from cage-free hens
- Designing seasonal menus
- Providing training for all catering staff
- Making free drinking water available
- Avoiding the use of endangered fish species
- Displaying information about food provenance
- Ensuring suppliers meet food safety standards
- Complying with government guidelines for food and nutrition in schools.
Citywide’s dedication to quality is further demonstrated by their careful selection of suppliers and use of British-sourced products and free-range eggs. Their menus are designed to be both healthy and appealing to children, with all new dishes tested to ensure satisfaction.
Councillor Barbara Bentham, Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, Environment and Community Safety, expressed pride in this achievement, stating: “We are delighted that Citywide Services as received the Bronze ‘Food for Life’ accreditation. This award is a testament to their unwavering commitment to providing our children with nutritious and sustainable meals. Giving our children a varied menu of fresh food options plays a vital role in building healthy relationships with food which can have long term health benefits.
