After scoring twice in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday night, Harry Kane moved level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals for England.

Unless the world were somehow to fall off its axis over these next couple of weeks, it looks certain that Kane will go on to break that record over the remainder of the tournament.

Over these past couple of years, particularly since making the move to Bayern Munich, there is no doubt that Kane has elevated himself to a new level. Quite simply, he is the most complete striker in world football.

Yet, curiously, it was a Scot who helped ignite Kane’s World Cup journey back in 2018, when six goals in that year’s tournament in Russia saw him win the golden boot.

There aren’t many Scots who have worn the Three Lions on their chest during a World Cup, but Allan Russell found himself in exactly that position back in 2018.

He became a trusted lieutenant in Gareth Southgate’s backroom staff, with the likes of Kane and Marcus Rashford both giving a glowing endorsement to Russell’s methods.

Russell’s spell working with the England national team over four years coloured a remarkable career on and off the pitch. From his days as a journeyman striker, to dabbling in some male modelling, brushing shoulders with Christina Aguilera, before marrying a high-profile actress and country singer.

Russell’s story is a tale of reinvention, transatlantic wanderings, and a blooming romance that feels scripted for one of his wife’s country ballads.

It begins in Glasgow, the city of his birth, and in the Scottish lower leagues with the likes of Hamilton Academical and St Mirren.

Russell had been on the books of Rangers as a youngster but eventually moved on to try and forge a career for himself elsewhere in Scotland.

He had spells in England with Macclesfield, Mansfield and Forest Green Rovers, before returning north of the border with Partick Thistle, Airdrie and Kilmarnock.

Jim Jefferies, the manager who signed Russell for Kilmarnock, spoke of a ‘terrific lad’ who always kept himself in peak physical condition.

Kenny Black, who managed Russell at Airdrie when he scored 26 goals in all competitions in 2007-08, said: ‘He is relentless in training. He wouldn’t stop practising his finishing until he hit his targets.

‘You could see he would probably go down that coaching route. He was really thorough, looked after himself Monday to Friday, so Saturday would take care of itself.’

It was unglamorous toil. Modest goal tallies, modest salaries, dressing rooms heavy with the scent of embrocation and damp kit, and the yearly battle for new contracts.

But, nonetheless, the habits of a coach were starting to form. Russell’s eye for detail and desire for self-improvement were strong.

He finished his playing career in America with Carolina RailHawks and Orange County Blues — and it was during his time in the States that his interest in coaching began to fully crystallise.

In American sports, positional specialists are commonplace. Especially in the NFL, there are individual coaches for quarterbacks, line-backers, wide receivers, tight ends and so on.

‘In my career, I felt there was never enough detail on how strikers should be trained and coached,’ said Russell.

‘When I was in America, I looked at the NFL and the detail that goes into getting an extra one per cent out of these guys is incredible.

‘I took aspects of that into what I am doing now. I could never understand why, as a striker, they are not given specific training which allows them to work on their movement, awareness, timing of the runs and execution of the finish.

‘A goalscorer attacks the main production zones every time the ball comes into the box. Good finishers take awkward opportunities and they react quickly to second phases in the box.

‘Most importantly, they’re able to drift out of the game, but stay at a high level of focus so that when the opportunity comes, they lose their marker and finish.’

Russell then founded Superior Striker, his own coaching programme, in 2012, honing a methodology that blended movement patterns, timing, technique, video analysis and clinical execution.

Back home in Britain, word spread among players chasing that extra one per cent. Andre Gray, Saido Berahino, Wilfried Zaha, Aleksandar Mitrovic — forward after forward sought him out.

His sessions were different. Not the generic shooting drills of old, but something more surgical. Something more analytical. Video analysis became a key feature.

By 2017, Southgate brought him into the England setup. A few months later, Russell would be in the opposition dugout at Hampden as Scotland faced England in a World Cup qualifier.

That was the match where Leigh Griffiths scored two magnificent free-kicks, only for Kane to break Scottish hearts and rescue a 2-2 draw in stoppage-time.

By the time England reached the World Cup the following summer, Russell’s influence had grown. So, too, had Kane’s importance to England.

Their attacking output had improved significantly, especially at set-plays and in the quality of their finishing, and it was a Scot who had sharpened it all.

‘Every little helps,’ Kane said of Russell. ‘He does finishing sessions with us, tells us about opposition defenders, goalkeepers.

‘We are all top players but he is always coaching us things that continually give us an edge.’

Kane’s transformation in those early days working under Southgate and Russell exemplified the methods being introduced.

For a period, Russell was England’s secret weapon, the coach whom Southgate and Kane trusted implicitly.

Speaking in 2022, Russell said: ‘I’d had an average career as a forward. I played professional football for 18 years, but I never got to the highest level, and the standard of coaching I received reflected that.

‘I was never coached the intricacies of what it takes to be a top striker. There were plenty of coaches who I learned a lot from, but also many of my coaches taught me what not to do. I learned a lot from bad coaches about how not to coach.

‘I learned from the quality of coaches I had as a player that it’s often up to the individuals to take charge of their career.

‘To take England all the way to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018, with set-pieces such a big part of our success, was just incredible.

‘The players deserve massive credit for buying into the ideas, but Gareth and Steve Holland are the ones who put all the pieces together and were responsible for it.

‘Gareth and Steve put full trust in me to do what I thought was needed to improve England at set-plays and in attack. Not once at any point in the four, five years we worked together did they tell me to change what I was doing.’

Yet, Russell’s time with England would be ended prematurely due to personal reasons away from football.

In July 2020, a road traffic accident in Oxfordshire changed everything. Russell was a passenger in his Audi, driven by his brother Simon, who was twice the legal limit and uninsured.

The head-on collision at over 100mph with a Vauxhall Corsa, driven by an off-duty ambulance driver, left the victim with serious injuries. Simon Russell was later jailed for 32 months for drink driving.

Admitting he allowed his brother to drive his car whilst over the limit and uninsured, Allan Russell was fined £2,000.

It was a sorry episode and one which could have serious professional implications. In May 2021, just before that summer’s Euros, the FA issued a statement terminating his employment.

Aberdeen, where he had become assistant coach under Stephen Glass, stood by him, citing remorse and the chance for redemption.

Russell would eventually leave Aberdeen after a year at Pittodrie, before embarking on a spell with Norwich City.

But it is those years working with England that endures as the cornerstone of his coaching philosophy.

Russell has lived a life less ordinary. When he was cutting his teeth in the lower leagues in Scotland, he also worked as a model for hair and beauty companies in Glasgow.

One can only imagine the sort of jibes he would have faced from team-mates and opponents in those days.

In 2003, he was part of a group of topless men who carried Christina Aguilera on to the stage at an MTV awards ceremony in Edinburgh. He also had a couple of cameo roles as an actor in River City.

Not many players in the Scottish lower leagues could claim such versatility in their CV. On and off the pitch, Russell has always done things his own way.

He now lives in America and whilst his story in the States can be traced back to the end of his playing career, it is only over recent years that he has settled.

In 2022, Russell began dating Jana Kramer, the American actress and country music star famed for One Tree Hill as well as having several hit singles.

Engagement followed quickly, as did the birth of their son, and they married in 2024 at a small and intimate ceremony at Carnell Estate in Scotland.

They settled in Franklin, Tennessee, blending his precision coaching with her creative life.

Today, through Superior Striker’s ongoing programmes, Russell continues to preach attacking mastery. His website and social channels showcase the methodology that helped Kane become England’s all-time leading scorer and one of the world’s deadliest finishers.

It is a methodology that was forged in the lower leagues, Californian sunshine, and World Cup pressure.

Russell’s path — from Rangers youth to Hamilton Accies and Airdrie, American innovation, England coach, personal setbacks, modelling shoots and transatlantic marriage — embodies football’s deeper truths.

He proves the power of relentless craft: the hours refining angles, the need for composure and innovation, the video dissections to unlock marginal gains.

Kane’s record as England’s all-time leading goalscorer, the hundreds of forwards sharpened over the years — these are monuments to his work.

As Southgate once trusted him implicitly, so too do players seeking that extra edge.

Russell may never have lit up Old Trafford or the Bernabeu as a player, but in sculpting those who do, he has carved an indelible niche.

The Scot on the England bench, the model with a coach’s soul, the husband writing new verses in a country ballad.

His career reminds us that expertise blooms from the margins, and that there are many different paths to reach the top.
