Cheltenham’s Act of Remembrance for Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place on Monday 27 January 2025, 6.30pm in the Council Chamber at the Municipal Offices.
This Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebenica, Bosnia. We remember the millions of people murdered during the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in the genocides which followed.
We hope that Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 can be an opportunity for people to come together, learn from the past, and take actions to make a better future for all.
Members of Cheltenham Hebrew Congregation, Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community, and Cheltenham Borough Council invite you to join them for the evening, which will include guest speakers on the national theme ‘For a better future’; music; prayers and readings in English and Hebrew.
The Act of Remembrance will be led by Dr Adam Dunning and will be followed by an exhibition that will deepen and expand on the content shared. Tea, coffee and cake will be served.
Jennifer Silverston, from the Cheltenham Hebrew Congregation, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us of the necessity of guarding against discrimination, hate and prejudice, which if unchallenged, can ultimately lead to the unthinkable. We must all work hard to ensure a better future.”
Cllr Victoria Atherstone, cabinet member for safety and communities, said: “On Holocaust Memorial Day we come together to remember the mass atrocities of genocide and how they all begin. We all have an opportunity to take action for a better future where people regardless of their race, religion or gender do not suffer hatred, hostility, prejudice or persecution. Everyone is welcome to join us in our act of remembrance on Monday 27 January.”
