At least 17 people have been injured after a car struck football fans celebrating a world cup win in Mexico.
Footage shared online showed a black car driving through a large gathering of fans in Cabo San Lucas following Mexico’s win over Czechia late on Wednesday local time.
Authorities are understand exactly what happened, the city council said, adding that the driver was arrested and taken into custody with injuries.
The driver is believed to have accelerated suddenly when he found himself surrounded by people in his way who pushed against his car, according to municipal police.
The department responded to the incident at around 9.05pm and are working with investigating authorities to establish the full facts.
Los Cabos city council said police, ambulance and firefighters were immediately dispatched. Medical services personnel arrived at the scene to secure the area and take the casualties to hospital.
Emergency services are offering support to the families of the injured.
The affected roads have since been reopened with initial investigations completed.
