BYU’s Cosmo Cougar has built a reputation on pushing the envelope of what a mascot can do athletically, with a wild stunt over the weekend nearly ending tragically for the man inside the costume.
Cosmo’s latest stunt involved doing a cartwheel into a huge backflip. The catch is while in the air, the Cougars’ mascot had to flip over a moving vehicle.
Starting the run-up from the 20-yard line, Cosmo builds a lot of speed before he starts his acrobatics.
The cartwheel and dismount happen perfectly before he goes into the air.
Halfway through the backflip, Cosmo smacks his head against the moving vehicle with a loud smack that makes the crowd gasp around him.
After gaining his footing again, Cosmo gets up and runs around the end zone to show everyone he narrowly avoided disaster and is fine.
BYU’s mascot, Cosmo Cougar, attempted a wild stunt during Saturday’s football game
The move nearly ended in tragedy as Cosmo smacked his head on the top of the vehicle
The thud on the top of the vehicle was a sign of what was to come as BYU’s undefeated season ended on Saturday with a loss to then-three-win Kansas.
The Cougars lost to the Jayhawks 17-13 and fell eight spots in the College Football Playoff rankings because of the loss.
BYU will now likely have to win the Big 12 to guarantee themselves a spot in the 12-team playoff.
A two-loss Cougars team may be on the outside looking in with the logjam of teams around the bubble with better resumes than BYU.
Cosmo is sure to cook up something even more ridiculous as the Cougars season gets closer to being complete.
