Susannah Scaroni snares women’s wheelchair win

Dominant stuff from Susannah Scaroni, a West-Coaster thriving in the east. The 2023 champion just blew away the rest of the wheelchair racers on the hills mid-course, and never really looked back. So much experience, so much power. In she flies with a time of 1.40:16, conquering Boston again by more than two minutes.

Amane Beriso moves to the front of the women’s race

A concerted effort from Amane Beriso, kicking and putting Hellen Obiri and the rest in danger. Obiri has managed to go with Beriso and Yalemzerf Yehualaw, though the rest look to be flagging.

Marcel Hug claims men’s wheelchair victory!

Three in a row for Marcel Hug! An eighth Boston Marathon win overall for the Silver Bullet, unstoppable again on the New England roads. Like clockwork for the Swiss sensation.

Men on track for record time

The men’s field are making good progress, Sisay Lemma as yet unable to force himself free as he did last year with the elite men on track for a course record. Plenty more undulations to come, however, with an hour and 15 minutes of running still to come.

There was a bit of a hiccup for John Korir at the start – the 2024 Chicago Marathon winner took a tumble and is now bib-less, sporting a few scars of his brush with the asphalt.

The two Ethiopians just change up into another gear as they come through the refuelling zone at 10km, stringing out the women’s elite field as a few strain to hang on.

The women are still all together, too, with Hellen Obiri second in the line. Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso Shankule looks to have good form slightly further back as compatriot Rahma Tusa takes the front.

No gaps yet evident between the favourites in the men’s race.

The first couple of waves of mass participation entrants are underway – while at the finish line, this feels like cheating…

Boston Marathon

The wheelchair athletes have hit the hills, the pain on the face of Susannah Scaroni all too evident as she finds the right rhythm to get the wheels turning. The 2023 winner is moving clear of the field having missed her title defence last year.

Boston Marathon

Sisay Lemma now heads the men’s pack, no pacemakers ahead of him as is tradition in Boston. 4.32 for the first mile. Speedy.

Conner Mantz is right with Lemma – how fast can he and Clayton Young, close friends and so often together come the end, go today?

There’s the gun!

Away the elite women go, Hellen Obiri’s arms swinging with purpose as she powers into place at the front. 26.2 miles ahead of them.
