Scotland supporters have been given a massive boost ahead of the next European Championship campaign with the news that the national team’s matches will continue to be broadcast live and free-to-air on the BBC.

BBC chiefs have extended their rights agreement with UEFA for a further two years until June 2028 to make sure every senior men’s fixture involving Steve Clarke’s side, Wales and Northern Ireland will be available to fans without charge.

The new deal will see the organisation broadcast around 60 live matches across the next two years, including this autumn’s UEFA Nations League fixtures and every Euro 2028 qualifier featuring the three nations.

Scotland games moved permanently onto the BBC in March 2025, with last November’s iconic 4-2 World Cup qualifying win over Denmark at Hampden Park attracting 1.1 million viewers in Scotland and an average audience of 2.7 million across the United Kingdom.

This summer’s coverage has continued that momentum. Scotland’s opening Group C clash with Haiti drew a peak audience of 2.8 million viewers on BBC One and iPlayer, despite a 2am kick-off.

An average audience of 2.4 million watched the match, with 78 per cent of all television viewers across the UK tuned to BBC One, rising to an extraordinary 92 per cent audience share in Scotland.

Hayley Valentine, Director at BBC Scotland, said: ‘I am delighted that Scottish audiences will be able to continue to enjoy watching the national team free to air on the BBC.

‘The Tartan Army have brought us so much joy since the start of the World Cup, and audiences here have stayed up late in their millions to watch Scotland’s men.

‘This deal means they’ll be able to watch every moment of their games live on the BBC right through to Euro 2028.’

Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, added: ‘International football creates moments that unite communities, spark national pride and generate huge audiences across every platform.

‘We’re delighted to extend our partnership with UEFA and continue bringing every Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland men’s international match to fans free-to-air.

‘Whether watching on television, streaming on iPlayer or following through the BBC Sport website, app or our social channels, audiences can be sure the BBC will be there for every crucial moment on the road to UEFA EURO 2028.’
