Andy Burnham has laid out plans for devolving power away from London and toward regional governments in his first major policy speech since rejoining the House of Commons.

Burnham used his speech at the Manchester People’s History Museum on Monday, 29 June, to say that he would create “No 10 North” – a new Downing Street operation based in Manchester.

“No 10 North” would co-ordinate with local governments with the aim of empowering regions to set their own long-term strategy.

The former Greater Manchester mayor is on track to become UK prime minister on July 20 after Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to step down following poor local election results.
