Spring has sprung, bringing with it arguably the tastiest seasonal snacks. While Easter Sunday is synonymous with all-out lamb roasts and indulgent Easter eggs, there’s no better way to enjoy the run up than with one of the best hot cross buns.
Soft, warmly spiced buns studded with currants and sultanas, these beloved bakes have been enjoyed in British households for centuries. A fixture since the 1700s, some historians believe earlier versions may date as far back as 12th-century England.
Today, hot cross buns have had a bit of a makeover. Supermarkets and bakeries across the country now showcase their own twists on the traditional recipe, with flavours spanning everything from savoury cheese to filled centres. Still, for those who prefer to keep things traditional, there’s no shortage of classic varieties to enjoy.
To help fuel breakfasts and afternoon tea alike, I’ve taste tested almost twenty buns to find the best hot cross buns on offer this season. Keep scrolling for my full review and verdict.

How I tested
For a few weeks, my London flat became a bakery with the continuous wafts of fresh hot cross buns from my toaster. Toasting and buttering as you normally would eat then, I tested a range of supermarket and artisanal buns looking for a great tasting dough, balanced flavour and value for money. I was after buns that toasted well on the outside but stayed fluffy and moist on the inside, while also considering fillings and how well they kept in the cupboard after a few days.
