Six-year-olds are fun to shop for because their interests are so varied, from crafts to imaginative play, games and more. It’s also the age when they start getting very clear about what they like and don’t like, and their wish lists can get surprisingly long.

Six is also the age when children are happy to play on their own or with friends during playdates, while the adults get a bit of a breather. Toys tend to hold their attention for longer too, whether they’re building a LEGO set or drawing. It’s a stage where they can safely get stuck into activities without constant supervision, and play becomes really rewarding to watch as their confidence and motor skills develop.

Learning how to lose at games can be a big step for many children, so this is a good age to introduce both competitive games and more cooperative activities that help build empathy and other emotional skills. It’s also a stage where school life can feel tiring and overwhelming at times, so toys that help them unwind and stay calm are a great option too.

Limiting screen time can start to become a bit of a challenge with children aged six and above but I’ve chosen a range of options that might make it a bit easier. I’ve included picks to suit all interests and budgets that I think will keep your children happy and active – and cut down on the all too common “I’m bored” complaints.

The best gifts for six-year-olds 2026 are:

  • Best overall – Micro Scooter Cruiser LED: £149.95, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best budget buy – Hot Wheels 5-pack toy cars formula 1: £15.21, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best outdoor toy – Hyper Dash: £18.99, Amazon.co.uk
  • Best crafting toy – Djeco fairy box multi activity kit: £33, Brightminds.co.uk
  • Best screen-free product – Yoto mini player: £59.99, Amazon.co.uk

How I tested

I was helped by two little testers when compiling this guide (Kat Storr/The Independent)

My six-year-old twin testers have different tastes and interests so they were perfect for trying out a range of age-appropriate gifts. They explored the different toys, both together and separately, and we discussed what they liked and didn’t like about them. I tried to include a mix of toys, ranging from craft and sport-based, to building and imaginative play. All of the products in this round-up were approved by my discerning testers – and the grown-ups too.
