Lucas Herrington could be about to make history for Australia on the world’s biggest football stage – and it appears one of Europe’s biggest clubs is already watching closely.

The 18-year-old Socceroos defender is reportedly attracting interest from Spanish champions FC Barcelona ahead of what looms as a breakthrough FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.

Herrington is expected to be in contention for a starting spot when Australia opens its World Cup campaign against Türkiye in Vancouver, capping a remarkable rise that has taken him from the A-League to the international stage in less than two years.

And Barcelona are reportedly among several clubs monitoring the towering centre-back after his impressive start to life with Colorado Rapids.

The Queensland product joined Colorado from Brisbane Roar in January and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young defenders in Major League Soccer.

Herrington’s rapid development has not gone unnoticed.

Back in September 2024, then Brisbane Roar coach Ruben Zadkovich boldly declared the teenager was ‘the best defender in Australian football’.

Less than two years later, Herrington finds himself on the verge of becoming Australia’s youngest-ever World Cup starter.

If selected in Tony Popovic’s starting XI against Türkiye, he would surpass Adam Taggart’s record as the youngest Australian to start a World Cup match.

Even if he comes off the bench, Herrington would become the second-youngest Socceroo ever to appear at a World Cup, behind only Garang Kuol.

Despite the growing transfer speculation, Herrington has remained focused on the immediate task at hand.

‘I’m not really thinking too far in the future,’ he said.

‘So it is just Colorado and now just focusing on the World Cup. That’s where my focus is at the moment, so we’ll see what happens after that.’

The teenager’s calm approach has become one of his defining traits.

He has started Australia’s past three matches and looked unfazed against Mexico in front of nearly 80,000 fans at the Rose Bowl.

‘It’s just enjoyment. I love the game. I love playing,’ Herrington said.

‘So when we have a crowd like that, 80,000 probably already against us, it’s really special. It just gives you that energy you want for the game, that buzz.

‘I loved playing that game. I love playing every game, to be honest. It’s just extra special when you have that many fans in there.’

Herrington made his Socceroos debut in March and was overjoyed when he learned he had earned a place in Australia’s 26-man World Cup squad.

‘I’m over the moon. It’s a dream come true,’ he said.

‘I’m so happy to be here. I can’t wait for it all to get started.’

The defender, who models his game on Sergio Ramos and Virgil van Dijk, has quickly earned the respect of senior teammates.

Fellow defender Jason Geria believes Herrington has all the tools to become a star.

‘He has a really high ceiling,’ Geria said.

‘Really good kid, really nice, respectful, does all the right things, willing to learn. He just wants to come here and improve, and he’s enjoying it.

‘He has the right approach. He’s just embracing everything, doesn’t put too much pressure on himself.

‘I think that’s why he always looks so carefree on the pitch, he looks so relaxed and just at ease when he’s on the ball. It’s really, really nice to watch.

‘He’s fit in seamlessly here.’
