Liverpool will strengthen their squad if the right player becomes available at the right price, according to head coach Arne Slot.
It comes as the noise around a potential British record move for Alexander Isak reaches a deafening level, with Newcastle braced for a second bid after turning down the champions’ first offer of £110m a month ago.
The Reds are also circling over Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and could make another attempt to sign him in the coming days amid a dispute over his value with the Selhurst Park club and chairman Steve Parish.
Slot said: ‘Newcastle have signed a new No 9 (Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart) which is very nice for Eddie (Howe). Newcastle, if it’s true, and I have no reason to not believe what you are saying, are about to sign a new No 9.
‘That’s very nice for Eddie as Anthony Gordon is suspended and Alexander Isak has not been training with the team, so it’s nice to have a new No 9. I think I said after Monday, I could make a sub to impact the game.
Newcastle are braced for a second bid from Liverpool for wantaway striker Alexander Isak

Arne Slot gave an update on Liverpool’s pursuits of both Isak and Marc Guehi on Friday
‘As always we try to sign players to help us but there are no reasons to think after two games we need more.
‘We will always try to strengthen if it’s the right player at the right price. There are only a few days left (of the transfer window being open), so let’s see. There are only three or four days to go now, so let’s see if we do something.’
Liverpool have been tight-lipped on the situation of signing Isak and/or Guehi. But Daily Mail Sport understands they are planning to attack the final days of the transfer window and try their very best to get the targets in – though they won’t overspend for the sake of it.
Meanwhile, Xavi Simons’ move to Tottenham will have an impact on Liverpool’s sales as RB Leipzig have made direct contact over signing midfielder Harvey Elliott.
No official bid has been made yet and, as of this week, Liverpool thought it was more likely than not that Elliott would stay. That could change if the German club put a good offer on the table, with the Reds wanting upwards of £40m to sell the Englishman.
Kostas Tsimikas is closing in on a loan move to Roma.
Liverpool return to action on Sunday when they host Arsenal and they will be boosted by the return of Alexis Mac Allister after the Argentine missed the trip to Newcastle, while Conor Bradley has had a full week of training under his belt and could be fit enough to start.
