Anthony Gordon is a doubt for Newcastle’s trip to Arsenal after missing training on Tuesday, while Tino Livramento faces a battle to play again this season.

The England pair were both absent from the squad’s first session since Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Bournemouth, during which Livramento was forced off with a problem in his thigh area.

Gordon missed that game after reporting a hip injury last Wednesday and a subsequent scan revealed an issue, although it is expected he will return to play this season.

That is not yet certain for Livramento, who needs a second scan to determine the full extent of his injury. While not a long-term problem, the best-case scenario would be a return for the final couple of games of the campaign.

Anthony Gordon last featured in the 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on April 12, but missed last week’s game at Bournemouth with a hip injury

If not, it is thought the injury should clear before England’s World Cup preparations begin at the start of June, but the timing of the setback is far from ideal.

Gordon should have no concerns when it comes to the World Cup, but it’s unknown when he will be fit to feature for Newcastle. He has not yet been ruled out of Saturday’s game at the Emirates Stadium.

The 25-year-old’s future beyond this season is almost certain to be away from St James’ Park. Bayern Munich, among others, hold a strong interest, but the winger is yet to communicate any intentions to leave, or otherwise, to Newcastle.

They hope he can return to impact during the closing weeks of the season.
