The Minnesota Timberwolves have confirmed that Anthony Edwards will miss ‘multiple weeks’ after sustaining a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee.

The injury occurred during the second quarter of Minnesota’s 112-96 Game 4 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night. Edwards landed awkwardly after contesting a layup by Cam Johnson, causing his knee to bend backward.

He was helped to the locker room by team staff and was unable to return to the game.

While initial test results confirmed that Edwards avoided major ligament damage, the bone bruise will sideline him for a significant portion of the postseason.

The loss of Edwards is a major setback for Minnesota, as the 24-year-old is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 28.8 points per game during the playoffs.

Compounding the team’s backcourt issues, starting guard Donte DiVincenzo was also ruled out for the season during the same game after tearing his right Achilles tendon.

The double injury blow leaves the Timberwolves without their primary starting backcourt as they look to close out their series against Denver, which they lead 3-1.

Before going down with the injury Edwards had recorded five points and three rebounds for the Timberwolves.

He had been struggling with inflammation in his right knee over the past month, forcing him to play through discomfort in the first three games of the series.

Yet after not being listed as questionable on the injury report for Game 4 it appeared Edwards was on the mend.

In the absence of their backcourt stars, the Timberwolves saw a historic performance from Ayo Dosunmu, who exploded for 43 points.

Dosunmu’s record-breaking night allowed Minnesota to steamroll the Nuggets in the second half despite the mounting injury list.

Minnesota now faces a daunting Game 5 on Monday night in Denver, where they will likely lean on Naz Reid and Julius Randle to shoulder the offensive load.
