More than 900 cases of Alfredo sauce are being recalled at the highest risk level after a dry milk powder ingredient was potentially contaminated with salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a class one recall, its most serious classification, meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that using the contaminated product could cause sickness or even death.

Initially announced May 6, the recall was bumped up to the highest level June 4.

The recall affects 913 cases of Alfredo sauce, which are packed in three-pound, seven-ounce sealed poly bags, according to an FDA report. There are 12 bags per case.

The Coffee Connexion Co., a Tennessee-based food service and coffee manufacturer, voluntarily initiated the recall after a supplier warned them about a dry milk powder ingredient that is used in the product.

The recall remains ongoing. The Coffee Connexion Co. did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment.

The affected product carries UPC 0039954921963 and includes:

  • Batches 046188 through 046193 with a best-by date of January 12, 2028
  • Batches 047290 through 047296 with a best-by date of February 16, 2028
  • Batches 048029 through 048034 with a best-by date of March 9, 2028
  • Batches 049089 through 049094 with a best-by date of April 20, 2028

According to the FDA, the cases of sauce were distributed in every single U.S. state except for Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, North Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia.

The Coffee Connexion Co. primarily distributes its products to commercials kitchens including hospitals, universities, cafeterias and restaurants, meaning impacted customers likely did not buy the Alfredo sauce at a grocery store.

The FDA’s report does not say whether any illnesses have been reported due to the contamination. It also says that the company has not issued any press release about the recall.

Salmonella is a bacteria that often grows in raw or undercooked animal products. The bacteria can cause salmonellosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC estimates that salmonella causes about 1.35 million infections in the U.S. each year. People infected with salmonella often experience symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. Symptoms can set in six hours to six days after exposure.

While most people can recover from salmonella on their own within a week, the foodborne illness can seriously affect people with weakened immune systems, as well as young children, elderly adults and pregnant people.

The recall of Alfredo sauce comes weeks after Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips were recalled nationwide over fears of salmonella also due to a dry milk powder ingredient.
