Mark Hughes’ son, Alex, has died suddenly at the age of 38.

Alex was player recruitment lead at Grimsby Town at the time of his death, having previously worked for Manchester City as an analyst.

Releasing a statement via the League Managers Association, former Manchester City boss Mark Hughes said: ‘Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex.

‘Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo.

‘Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all.

‘We ask for privacy during this sad time as we come to terms with our family’s loss. The Hughes family’

After a brief playing career in Wales, Alex took up several roles off the pitch.

As well as being a licensed agent, he was an analyst at his dad’s former clubs Blackburn and Fulham before becoming director of football at AFC Fylde in 2024.

Dad Mark had an esteemed career, playing for Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn, before turning to management.

The former Wales manager left Carlisle last month after falling to defeat in the National League play-off semi-finals.
