Dejected Ireland players after the shootout

Caoimhin Kelleher 7

Could do nothing to stop Schick’s penalty, which was an outstanding finish, and it was the same for their bundled equaliser.

Seamus Coleman 8

Given he’s barely played since Budapest, this was truly heroic as he lasted 96 minutes. One of Ireland’s modern greats.

Jake O’Brien 7

He can look ungainly, but his power was required as the Czech challenge was based on long balls and collisions.

Nathan Collins 8

Almost scored twice inside the first eight minutes, then won a penalty. One of his best displays in the jersey.

Dara O’Shea 6

A linchpin who relished the Czech onslaught in the second half, but he was out-jumped by Krejci for the equaliser.

Ryan Manning 6

His deep corner led to the second goal, but then a senseless jersey pull undid that good work only moments later.

Jayson Molumby 8

In his best game for Ireland, he almost produced a brilliant first international goal, his shot caroming off the foot of the Czechia post.

Jack Taylor 7

This was a solid showing from the Ipswich man, who was good when Ireland dominated and dug in when the pressure came.

Finn Azaz 6

One sumptuous turn and shot was a highlight. His impact declined as the Czechs took control. His penalty was poor.

Chiedozie Ogbene 8

On a night of some sterling contributions, he was terrific given how little he’s played. He was the most promising Irish out-ball.

Troy Parrott 7

Started the match in a frenzy, scoring one and nearly another, but was exhausted by the end. Still managed a superb shootout finish.

Substitutes 5

THIS will be debated for a long time to come, as Heimir Hallgrímsson made just two changes in normal time, while the chasing Czechs made four, and wrestled control.

Alan Browne and Robbie Brady brought some badly-needed energy in the second half, and Adam Idah was game when he came on.

Coach 6

For 50 minutes, it looked a growing probability that Ireland would be in Lansdowne Road on Tuesday night. Hallgrimsson oversaw half a masterclass. His decision not to prioritise penalties sounded risky in advance, and it turned out to be a fateful call.
