On 3 March 2026, the British Embassy in Turkmenistan hosted the first Turkmen–British Forum on Climate Finance in Ashgabat, organised in partnership with TheCityUK, the industry-led body representing the United Kingdom’s financial and related professional services sector.

The event brought together senior representatives of Turkmenistan’s government ministries, state and commercial banks, international organisations, multilateral development banks and private sector companies. The forum provided an important platform to discuss how climate finance can support sustainable economic growth and investment in Turkmenistan.

TheCityUK represents a broad network of global banks, asset managers, insurers, legal and advisory firms that operate at the centre of international capital markets. Through its expertise in sustainable and green finance, the organisation plays a key role in mobilising international investment and supporting the development of climate-related financial frameworks around the world.

During the forum, international experts and UK industry representatives shared practical insights on

  • structuring climate finance mechanisms

  • strengthening national policy frameworks

  • creating enabling environments for investment

  • deploying financial instruments that support sustainable development

Participants also explored international best practices and regional examples that can help support Turkmenistan’s transition towards a more resilient and lower-carbon economy.

The Forum brought together senior policymakers, financial institutions, international organisations and private sector leaders.

Representatives of TheCityUK and its member organisations expressed their strong interest in working with Turkmen partners to mobilise climate finance and attract greater foreign direct investment into the country’s economy.

The United Kingdom stands ready to support Turkmenistan in unlocking green growth, strengthening resilience and attracting international investment

The forum highlighted the significant potential for deeper cooperation between the United Kingdom and Turkmenistan in areas such as sustainable finance, climate resilience and green investment.

The United Kingdom remains committed to supporting Turkmenistan in developing sustainable financial frameworks, strengthening institutional capacity and attracting international investment that supports long-term green economic growth.

The British Embassy in Ashgabat looks forward to building on the momentum generated by the forum and transforming dialogue into practical cooperation that benefits both countries and supports Turkmenistan’s sustainable development ambitions.
