News from Shrewsbury Town Council

Shrewsbury Town Council is pleased to announce that its Young Shrewsbury programme will be delivering Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) sessions over the Easter holidays for young people who receive free school meals.

Funded by central government and delivered locally in partnership with Shropshire Council, the HAF programme provides enriching activities and nutritious meals for eligible children and young people during the school holidays.

This Easter, sessions delivered by Young Shrewsbury will take place at The Grange Youth Club on Tuesday 31 March, Wednesday 1 April, Tuesday 7 April and Wednesday 8 April, running from 4pm to 7pm and aimed at young people in Year 5 to Year 10 (ages 9–16).

Young Shrewsbury’s experienced youth work team will deliver a varied programme of activities in an informal learning environment. Activities will include dance and drama, art sessions, cooking skills, organisation visits and talks, indoor multi-sports in the sports hall, table tennis, pool and softball, among others.

In addition to taking part in activities, attendees will receive nutritious food similar to the free school meals provided to them as a student from a low-income family. Participants will be encouraged to take part in preparing healthy meals on a budget and will also be encouraged to take part in gardening activities within the vegetable and orchard garden.

Andy Hall, youth and community manager at Shrewsbury Town Council, said:

“The Easter HAF sessions are a fantastic opportunity for young people to stay active, learn new skills and spend time with friends in a safe and welcoming environment.

“At Young Shrewsbury, everything we do is rooted in the values of youth work — promoting equality and inclusion and ensuring every young person has the opportunity to participate and feel valued. We already support young people with additional needs and we warmly welcome those with SEN to join us.

“Our programme is about much more than just activities. We focus on building self-confidence, motivation, communication skills, teamwork and resilience. By combining fun, informal learning with nutritious food and positive role models, we aim to make a real difference during the school holidays.”

Across Shrewsbury, there will be 11 activity providers delivering HAF sessions this Easter, ensuring that activities are accessible to young people in all parts of the town. This wide range of providers means families can find a local club that suits their needs, offering everything from sports and creative arts to educational and enrichment opportunities.

Shrewsbury Town Council has also secured further HAF funding to deliver 16 additional sessions over the summer holidays, which will include educational trips alongside the core activity programme.
