Wrexham are hoping to sign Fulham captain Tom Cairney in the summer window in a major show of ambition.

The Welsh side will be competing in the second tier next season for the first time since 1982 after storming League One to secure a third consecutive promotion.

They are looking to bolster their squad with players experienced in higher divisions and Cairney would be the perfect fit, having led the Cottagers to promotion from the Championship on three occasions.

Wrexham have already made an approach, according to The Telegraph, although discussions are still in the early stages.

The 34-year-old has been at Craven Cottage for a decade and has captained the west Londoners since 2017.

But the midfielder, who has made 23 Premier League apperances this season, is likely to leave Fulham when his contract expires at the end of the season.

That means the Red Dragons could land Cairney for free, albeit on competetive wages for the Championship.

Cairney has been capped by Scotland twice and has played 318 times in the Championship.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has previously opted for those with experience and has signed former Premier League players Jay Rodriguez, James McClean and Steven Fletcher in recent seasons.

Jonny Evans and Jamie Vardy have also been linked with a move to the Racecourse Ground.

Parkinson said the club would have a ‘no superstars and no egos’ policy as the club push for promotion to the Premier League.

‘I think it’s interesting because the jump in salaries is incredible – mind-blowing,’ he said.

‘Even coming up to [League One] level, the jump to get players of Championship quality is expensive but obviously with the next level, I don’t think people outside football quite realise.

‘We’ve always tried to make sure the culture in the club is right and I think that’s key – no superstars, no egos in the dressing room – and we’ve got to try and get that balance right again.

‘You always need extra quality when you go up a level to make sure the right people come into the building.’

Wrexham’s promotion was confirmed last month but celebrations have continued and last week the squad jetted out to Las Vegas for a third promotion party.

This years bash, which included a pool party and trips to the Bellagio Hotel and Hakkasan Nightclub, reportedly cost Ryan Reynolds and his co-owner Rob McElhenney a staggering £500,000.

Meanwhile, season four of the popular Welcome to Wrexham documentary, which showcases the club’s rise under Reynolds and McElhenney, will be released on Friday.
