Former Chicago Cubs outfielder Jason Heyward has announced his retirement from Major League Baseball a decade on from their World Series triumph.
Heyward, 36, was part of the Cubs’ 2016 championship-winning team after joining them as a free agent that year. He went on to spend seven seasons in Chicago.
The All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner started his career with the Atlanta Braves and also enjoyed stints with the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and San Diego Padres.
Heyward wrote in an emotional statement on Instagram: ‘After 31 years, 16 Major League Seasons. I’d like to take one last time to show LOVE to the game of BASEBALL as a player.
‘You’ve taken me around the world. Given me something to dream of and work towards as a kid and a professional.
‘You’ve shown me the value of sacrifice, support, family, friends, competition, winning, respect, growth and many other lessons along the way.’
