An Argentine journalist abandoned his post in front of a microphone in order to seize his chance to get a picture with Colombian pop icon Shakira at the opening match of the World Cup.

Shakira was at the Estadio Mexico City just hours before the opening match of the soccer tournament between Mexico and South Africa.

The singer was there to perform her latest World Cup anthem – ‘Dai Dai [Let’s Go]’ – that she sang along with Nigerian rapper Burna Boy.

But as she was walking near the field, she caught the eye of journalist Marcelo Benedetto – who was in the middle of reporting from the stadium.

Benedetto was seen speaking to the camera before he began to walk away and set his microphone down.

At this point, his cameraman noticed the ‘Waka Waka’ singer and zoomed in on her, following her as she walked along the lower bowl.

Eventually, she reached Benedetto who asked her for a photograph.

Shakira happily obliged, pursing her lips and throwing up a peace sign as Benedetto grinned for the picture.

Video of the incident went viral, with a caption in Spanish reading, ‘The great Marcelo Benedetto leaving the live broadcast to go ask Shakira for a photo. Priorities, always.’

One comment read, ‘Haha, he knows that kind of opportunity only comes once in a lifetime.’

Another user posted, ‘I don’t judge him because we all would have done the same.’

This is not the first time that Benedetto has posed for photos with celebrities at major sporting events.

In the comments under the video, a user shared a photo Benedetto took with singer Dua Lipa at the 2018 UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv.
