Whitchurch Civic Centre
The working group set up to consider and agree the future of Whitchurch Civic Centre met yesterday [2 September 2005] to consider how a future civic centre might look.
The Civic Centre has been closed since September 2023 – except for the sports/market hall – after specialist engineers found that RAAC concrete exists across the majority of the complex, and that it has major structural issues.
The aspiration is to potentially redevelop the site and create a new, modern, fit-for-purpose and energy-efficient building – subject to funding being available.
At its meeting this week the Whitchurch Civic Centre working group – made up of local Shropshire Councillors, Whitchurch Town Councillors, Helen Morgan MP, and officers from both councils – considered what space and facilities should be provided in a future centre, parking requirements, and whether it should be a single storey building.
At its next meeting the group hopes to agree a preferred layout and agree to more detailed design work being carried out.
Councillor Andy Hall, chairman of the working group, said:
“The recently published independent needs analysis has shown how much the local community values the civic centre, and what they would require from a future centre.
“We can now start considering how a future civic centre could and should look, to ensure that it provides the facilities and activities that local people want, and initial discussions have now taken place.
“Subject to funding being secured we hope that we’ll soon agree a draft design/layout for a future centre so that work can be carried out to develop these plans.”
