Wolves have revealed plans to install a permanent memorial in tribute to Diogo Jota following his death aged 28 earlier this month.

Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed in a car crash in northern Spain on July 3 in an accident that sent millions into mourning.

The Portuguese winger, who was part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning side last season, made 131 appearances for Wolves and scored 44 goals during a three-year spell at the club after initially joining on loan from FC Porto in 2017.

He then moved to Anfield in a £41million transfer in the summer of 2020 after impressing as part of the side that secured European football under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Now, Wolves have publicly shared plans to honour Diogo and Andre permanently following their passing.

A statement on Wolves’ club website read: ‘Over the past week, the area outside Molineux has become a moving and powerful tribute to Diogo Jota and his younger brother Andre, following their tragic passing.

‘The club is truly grateful to everyone who has visited to pay their respects, and to those who have left messages, shirts, scarves and flowers in Diogo’s memory. The outpouring of love has been a source of comfort to all who knew him.

‘With heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast in the coming days, staff have begun carefully removing and preserving items from the tribute area to protect them from damage.

‘Supporters are encouraged to visit on Monday July 14 if they wish to view the tributes before the anticipated weather condition changes.

‘All non-perishable items will be carefully stored and will be retained for potential inclusion in a more permanent memorial, which the club is now exploring as a lasting way to honour Diogo and Andre.

‘Floral tributes will also be gathered and will be turned into coloured ink, which can then be used as part of a bespoke artwork or tribute. Further details will be shared once plans are confirmed.’

After Liverpool paid tribute to Jota in their pre-season friendly against Preston on Sunday, Wolves announced plans to do the same in their last home friendly before the 2025-26 Premier League season gets underway, where they will plan another tribute.

The statement added: ‘Diogo and André’s passing will also be marked at two of Wolves’ upcoming home fixtures – the final home friendly against Celta Vigo and opening Premier League match against Manchester City.

‘The club is working closely with supporters to ensure both tributes are fitting of Diogo’s legacy at Wolves, with the main commemorations planned for the Man City fixture. Full details will be shared with supporters ahead of the games.

‘Thank you once again for your compassion, care and respect during this difficult time.’

During Liverpool’s victory over Preston, striker Darwin Nunez paid tribute to Jota by copying his celebrations after scoring the Reds’ second goal in a 3-1 win.

After finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute, the Uruguay international wheeled off to the corner flag, sat down, and pretended to play on a video game remote – his old team-mate’s signature move.

Nunez also performed the shark gesture Jota gave when he scored against Everton at Goodison Park this year.
