Kai Rooney continued his impressive rise through the Manchester United youth ranks as he bagged four goals against Norwich’s U16s.

The 16-year-old, who is the son of United legend Wayne, has been in the club’s academy since he was 11 and made his debut at Old Trafford with the U18 team last month.

And Kai put in yet another strong performance as United’s U16s beat the Canaries’ youth side 6-4 in the Premier League Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Posing with the match ball after the game, Kai shared an image of himself to his 400,000 Instagram followers.

‘PL cup semi final. 6-4 win vs Norwich. Four (football emoji),’ he wrote.

He later shared an image of his No 7 shirt on the dressing room floor after the game.

It comes just two days after The Sun reported that Kai was offered a new £50,000-per-year scholarship deal by the club, alongside a ‘very strong’ group of 13 other youngsters.

The gifted bunch was said to include Jacey Carrick – son of Michael, who is the current interim United manager.

Kai made his debut at the Theatre of Dreams in late January against Derby County’s U18s.

The decision by Darren Fletcher, one of Wayne Rooney’s old team-mates, triggered a wave of ‘Rooney, Rooney’ chants from the 2,000-strong crowd in attendance.

The teenager took it all in his stride as mum Coleen and dad Wayne sat alongside Carrick in the stands.

‘My message of support is that I’m coming along to watch and I’m excited,’ Carrick said of his decision to attend.

‘I was lucky enough to play and win the FA Youth Cup when I was young at West Ham.

‘It’s such an important competition, especially for this club. Young players, Old Trafford under the floodlights, feeling what it means, a bit of expectation.’

Kai has been keen to ensure he is making his own name in football, saying back in August that he is not trying to be his dad.

‘I’m my own person,’ he said. ‘I want to see how my career goes, obviously try to do the best I can and try to reach the biggest stages.

‘I’m just focusing on me and to try to not let any pressure get to me and just keep working on me day by day, month by month.’
