Warren Gatland said he was ‘motivated’ to want to remain in charge of Wales despite his position as the country’s head coach now being under serious scrutiny.
A 45-12 defeat by back-to-back world champions South Africa means Wales have now lost 12 Tests in a row and every international in 2024 – the first time since 1937 they have gone a whole calendar year without a win. The Welsh Rugby Union will now hold a review into the national team’s performance, before deciding whether or not to stick with Gatland.
‘We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of days. I’ll have a chat with the powers that be and the family as well,’ said Gatland.
‘I’d only be human if I said the last few weeks have been challenging with the amount of negativity. I’m motivated to want to be here. We’ve got a good group of men.
‘It was a really tough game. But I can’t question how hard our players tried. I thought they gave absolutely everything. I think people should be really proud of that.
‘I’m not content with the result. I’m disappointed with the result.’

Wales captain Dewi Lake told the country’s supporters to stay loyal after another loss.
‘We have to keep the faith. As soon as we lose that faith in ourselves, it’s pointless us going on the field. We can definitely see light at the end of the tunnel,’ he said.
‘It’s been a tough road. The journey is just as important as the destination. We’re enjoying the journey. We’re never going to get tired of putting the jersey on.
‘I thought we showed a lot of heart and character in parts of that game. Thank you to all the fans for coming out and supporting. We’re probably just not there yet as a group.’
