Valdo Calocane attacked a police officer who was helping doctors to detain him two years before he fatally stabbed three people in Nottingham, a public inquiry has heard.
Footage released by Nottinghamshire Police shows Calocane headbutting, punching and swinging handcuffs at Police Constable Barnaby Pritchard on 3, September 2021. The attack caused swelling to the officer’s face.
The inquiry heard that Calocane, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, had been refusing to take his medication when he launched the 2021 attack.
He was taken in a marked police van to hospital, as he had been tasered, before he was taken to a mental health facility.
Calocane was charged with assaulting an emergency worker and summonsed to attend Nottingham Magistrates’ Court in September 2022, but failed to appear.
There was a warrant for his arrest when he committed the attacks on 13 June, 2023, when he killed University of Nottingham undergraduates Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and grandfather Ian Coates, 65.
