Love shouldn’t hurt
As we approach Valentine’s Day, traditionally a celebration of love and affection, it’s important to recognise that for some individuals in Shropshire, this day will be another of enduring abuse.
Domestic abuse affects countless individuals, regardless of their background, age, gender, or socioeconomic status. It manifests in various forms, including physical violence, emotional abuse, coercive control, and financial exploitation.
No one should have to endure such treatment.
This Valentine’s Day, Shropshire Council stands in solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse. We want to remind everyone that help is available, and no one should suffer in silence.
Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for domestic abuse services, said:
Here at Shropshire Council, we are committed to raising awareness about Domestic Abuse as well as offering a range of support services for those affected. However, we also want to address those who are causing harm. It is never too late to take responsibility for your actions and make a change.
This Valentine’s Day, we urge you to reflect on your behaviour and seek help to break the cycle of abuse.
For those who think they are hurting a loved one or family member, now is the time to take responsibility and make a change. Here are some steps to break the cycle of abuse and foster a healthier relationship:
- Educate Yourself: Understand the effects of abuse on your partner and children. This knowledge can motivate change.
- Communicate Openly: Improve communication by actively listening and expressing feelings without aggression.
- Create a Support Network: Surround yourself with positive influences and consider support groups for people who harm.
- Respect Boundaries: Recognise your partner has the right to feel safe and valued.
- Take Responsibility: Acknowledge the harm caused, apologise sincerely, and commit to change.
- Seek Professional Help: Consider seeking support and/or attending programs specifically designed for people who harm such as Cranstoun and Respect UK Phoneline.
Cranstoun offers the DRIVE and Men and Masculinities programs in Shropshire, designed to address and change the behaviour of people who cause harm. Their goal is to break the cycle of abuse and create safer environments for survivors. You can refer to Cranstoun here and contact them directly for guidance on the referral process at 01905 917450.
Respect UK Phoneline is a confidential helpline, email, and webchat service for domestic abuse perpetrators and those supporting them. Call the helpline at 0808 802 4040 or email [email protected].
