“I was like royalty I was, I couldn’t believe it… I thought ‘this is a dream, this isn’t happening to me’.”

Avril Davidge, 93, had never been to America, hadn’t been on a plane in 30 years and rarely left her flat.

But after going down a YouTube rabbit hole and falling in love with a folk parade in Philadelphia, she made a 3,400 mile trip to see it for herself.

Avril, who lost her husband Clifford in 2023, said watching the folk parade brought a smile back to her face and helped her “more than any doctor or medicine”.

She would often joke “when we go to Philadelphia” to her family but said she never anticipated she would actually get the chance.
