Former Major League Baseball star Davey Lopes has died aged 80 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Lopes had been had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Rhode Island for the progressive brain disorder before he passed, according to TMZ.

Lopes was a two-time World Series champion and a four-time All-Star during his storied career. He spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He spent 10 years in LA and won one of his World Series titles during his time on the team, after playing a crucial role in their 1981 success.

As well as his decade at the Dodgers, Lopes also played for the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and Oakland A’s.

He would later win his second World Series title during his coaching career, after helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Ray Bays in 2008.

The tragic news came just hours after Dodgers star Miguel Rojas announced the sudden death of his father in an emotional Instagram post.

The Venezuelan shortstop, 37, was scratched shortly before the first pitch of the Dodgers’ win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday to attend to a family matter.

In the statement, the two-time World Series champion wrote in Spanish on Wednesday: ‘With immense sorrow on behalf of the entire Rojas family, I must share with all those who had the privilege of knowing and spending time with my father, Miguel Rojas – known as “Micky” – that he passed away suddenly yesterday afternoon, April 7th.

‘I wish to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has reached out to me and my family to express their affection and let us know just how deeply loved my father was throughout his life. May God welcome him into His glory, and may he rest in peace.’

Rojas shared a number of pictures of his father along with the post and wrote alongside a picture of his father with his son: ‘You left, Dad, and what hurts the most is that I couldn’t say goodbye.’

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts suggested Rojas could be leaving the team on Wednesday to be with his family. But he was named in the line-up for the final game against the Blue Jays.
