Two-time Super Bowl champion and former New York Giants head coach Ray Handley has passed away at the age of 81.
The news of the ‘Big Blue’ icon’s death was confirmed by his nephew, Rob Handley, who shared a touching tribute on Thursday. Handley, who spent nearly a decade with the franchise, died on February 5, 2026, leaving the NFL community in mourning.
In a post on LinkedIn, Rob wrote that Handley’s life was defined by hashtag ‘intensity’, ‘ambition’, ‘competition’ ‘and an unwavering connection to the game of football’.
The former coach was a pivotal figure during one of the most successful eras in the history of the New York Giants.
He served as the team’s running backs coach under the legendary Bill Parcells, helping secure Super Bowl rings in 1986 and 1990.
Following Parcells’ shock retirement after Super Bowl XXV, Handley was hand-picked to lead the team as head coach.

Handley’s tenure as head coach began in 1991, where he faced the task of following a championship-winning season.
His first major move was a controversial one, sparking a high-stakes quarterback battle between Phil Simms and Jeff Hostetler. Despite the pressure, Handley led the Giants to an 8-8 record in his debut year, narrowly missing out on the postseason.
However, a difficult 1992 campaign saw the team slide to 6-10, ultimately leading to his departure from the organization.
While his time at the helm was short-lived, his contributions as an assistant solidified his status as a club legend. Handley was part of a star-studded coaching staff that included future Hall of Famer Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin.
Under his guidance, the Giants’ ground game became a terrifying force, led by powerhouse backs like Ottis Anderson.
Before his professional career, Handley was a standout player at Stanford, where he earned first-team All-PCC honors in 1964. He returned to his alma mater to coach before making the jump to the NFL with the Giants in 1984.
