San Francisco 49ers great Terrance ‘Chet’ Brooks has died at the age of 60 following a battle with cancer.

Brooks was a standout defensive back for Texas A&M before making it to the NFL where he won two Super Bowls with the Niners.

The Aggies announced his passing in an emotional statement detailing his legacy on Saturday as tributes from around the footballing community began to flood in.

Brooks, who was credited for coming up with the ‘Wrecking Crew’ nickname of the Aggies defense in the mid-1980s, spent four decorated years in College Station.

As an All-SWC and All-American safety, he helped lead Texas A&M to to three-straight Southwest Conference Championships as well as three consecutive Cotton Bowls.

The defenseman went on to be selected by the 49ers in the 11th round of the 1988 NFL draft. He played three seasons in San Francisco, winning the 1988 and 1989 Super Bowls with the team, which boasted stars such as Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.

He made two interceptions in the 1989 postseason, including a pick of John Elway in Super Bowl 24 that Brooks returned for 38 yards.

Brooks, who earned All-Madden team honors in 1989, played 33 games, starting 23, in his three seasons in the NFL.

The Texas native made three interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble in his career, stepping away from the game after his third season.

Many members of the football community took to social media to pay tribute to Brooks after the news of his passing broke.

Many wrote ‘here’ on social media as Aggies alumni are asked to do so in remembrance of those in the student body who have passed away.

Brooks was inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and later into the Texas A&M Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.
